Major Stuart Lloyd is a Behavioral
Scientist in the United States Air Force, currently serving as an Assistant Professor of Behavioral Sciences and Leadership
at the Air Force Academy (USAFA) in Colorado Springs, CO. He is a student
of Dennis Genpo Merzel Roshi*, and recently received shukke tokudo (monastic ordination vows) within the White
Plum Asanga* (a worldwide Soto Zen community founded by the late Taizan Maezumi Roshi*).
Major Lloyd's graduate work
is in applied clinical psychology, focused in psychotherapy with highly religiously committed individuals. In addition to having taught introductory behavioral science and one of the nation’s leading undergraduate
courses in leadership, Maj Lloyd is also the creator and course director for the USAFA’s first-ever course in the psychology
of religion. The highlight of this course is the school’s first-ever presentation
of Ken Wilber’s AQAL framework and its application via Ken’s groundbreaking new work, Integral Spirituality*.
Outside the classroom, Major Lloyd’s
community service centers on leveraging his skills and experience for the benefit of the school’s Buddhist cadets and
the larger Air Force Buddhist community. As the Officer-In-Charge for the USAFA
Cadet Sangha, he works alongside Sarah Bender Sensei, the sangha's Spiritual Leader, and is responsible for ensuring the accomodation
of the cadet sangha's spiritual needs, to include weekly services, spiritual and personal counseling and support, and
program administrative oversight. He is also currently helping lead the effort
to construct the Air Force's first-ever dedicated Buddhist Chapel within the USAFA Cadet Chapel in Summer 2007.
Major Lloyd was also a key player in the development of comprehensive religious diversity sensitivity training delivered
to over 3,600 cadets, faculty, and staff, in the wake of several serious problems with religious intolerance at USAFA. In addition, his deep commitment to the Big Mind* process resulted in USAFA’s
being the first university in the world to host a Big Mind workshop led by Big Mind creator Genpo Roshi.
Major Lloyd is a grateful member
of Kanzeon Zen Center
in Salt Lake City, Utah, and
is currently in training to become a Big Mind facilitator. His professional and
academic affiliations include the American Psychological Association, the Society for the Scientific Study of Religion,
the American Academy of Religion, the Skeptics Society, and American Mensa.
Most importantly, Major Lloyd is the proud husband of Lynne
and the even prouder daddy of Jonathan and Cara, the two most amazing kids in the world. And as if this wasn't enough,
he enjoys the distinct privilege of regularly teaching, leading, and learning from some of the finest young cadets
in this or any military academy in the world.
